Zaimont. The concert will conclude with five movements from Handel's great oratorio Messiah, closing in celebration with the well-known "Hallelujah Chorus".

The even was presented at the First Baptist Church of Maricopa, 18705 John Wayne Parkway.

This delightful hour-long program was an intriguing and artistic sequence of works drawn from opera, ballet, stage -- and cartoons! Solo turns for individual musicians were highlighted throughout the performance in a mix that balanced more-intimate scorings with full orchestral compositions. The music included works by Mozart, Bizet, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Smetana, Saint-Saens, Fritz Kreisler, and Raymond Scott.

Spring Serenade 2014

Saturday March 15, 2014 at 7:00pm

We ushered in the new season with an appealing variety of orchestral and choral music ranging from festive to reverent.

This special event was presented at the First Baptist Church of Maricopa

The twin spirits of dance and song animated the wide-ranging program, from contemplative pieces through many moods of celebration and romance and on to great melodies from the big-band era and Broadway stage. Highlights included devotional numbers by Mendelssohn and Rutter, instrumental excerpts from operas by Bizet and Saint-Saens, pieces by Tchaikovsky and Debussy rooted in the dance, and a group of catchy tunes from the '20s, '30s and '40s.

Of particular interest were portions of Schubert's lovely Mass in G; the very-Parisian "La Vie en Rose" (made famous by chanteuse Edith Piaf); and two waltzes, one by Fritz Kreisler and the other a classic Viennese-style waltz by Mexican composer Juventino Rosas. Rosas was a 19th century conservatory-trained composer and violinist and his "Sobre las Olas" (Over the Waves), first published in Mexico City in 1888, was immensely popular world-wide. It has been transcribed for use in everything from New Orleans jazz to Country and Western music, and for circus trapeze artists, and its lyrical main melody remains familiar to us today, 125 years later.
